What’s an “aster”?

The wildflower aster is, for me, a beautiful symbol of the self. The name of this small, weedy wildflower translates as “star.” This one word holds within it both a sweet, tiny, fragile thing and a great, spectacular, cosmic being. Sounds a bit like you and me.

“The Greek word for ‘star,’ aster, is both a scientific and a common name. Asters are cosmopolitan in their distribution, growing in a variety of habitats from near sea level to the summits of the highest eastern mountains.” -Wildflowers in Color field guide

“All things by immortal power,
Near and Far
To each other linked are,
That thou canst not stir a flower
Without troubling of a star.”
